Thirteen days later, after a tearful farewell from Mrs Wood, when she pressed a small leather wallet into his hand during a close, wet hug, Fergal climbed up on the cab alongside her husband.

No words were spoken until the vehicle halted at Union Station. Despite the sunshine, the breeze coming in from Lake Ontario had an underlying chill and Fergal was glad to climb down into the lee of the coach and its relative shelter. He reached up for the carpetbag, given to him by the family, containing a shirt and some long underwear donated during his short time in their care. He grasped Mr Woods’ hand warmly but said nothing. The man tapped the brim of his hat with the stock of the whip, looked at Fergal for a long moment, turned and said, “Walk on.”

Fergal held his awe in check. Although he had travelled halfway across the world from the hub of the empire to this point, he had seen nothing as grand or impressive as the interior of Union Station. It was a hive of activity with travellers milling about, yet despite the number, the interior dwarfed the crowd, appearing cathedral-like with the size and breadth of its vaulted ceiling.
